  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Christopher Taylor -- Let’s Face It… : …if you were 16 in 1997, owned a skinny black tie and enjoyed Skaturday, this is the book for you. At least, that’s the impression that I get. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Peter -- Gives a needed look into the Ska and Swing crazes of the 90's : I loved this book! So many hours of my teenage years in the mid-90's were spent going to ska shows, and obsessivly searching out details on my favorite bands. Like most I grew up and out of the scene. But looking back I often wondered, "how did that whole scene happen?!". How were so many bands able to form, go on constant tours to clubs for of eager skanking youths, record multiple albums, and then overnight have the demand disappear? Not just disappear, but retreat in a sort of shame. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paul Sanwald -- Fantastic Retrospective of 90s Ska : I spent a lot of time on the road in the 90s playing guitar with a ska band, and then in the early 00s with a swing band. This book is an awesome retrospective of the scene at the time, with a lot of details I didn't know. Highly recommended!!!! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2021 )

"Hell of a Hat is the long-overdue chronicle of how the ska and swing movements of the late twentieth century were more than mere fads. In his frantic and fascinating book, Partridge authoritatively defends the love that an entire generation had for these two cultural revivals, which flew against the angst-ridden stereotype of the '90s. In the late '90s, third-wave ska broke across the American alternative music scene like a tsunami. In sweaty clubs across the nation, kids danced themselves dehydrated to the peppy rhythms and punchy horns of bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish. As ska caught fire, a swing revival brought even more sharp-dressed, brass-packing bands to national attention. Hell of a Hat ...
